The 69th Tokyo International Guitar Competition holds its second preliminary round at Hakuju Hall on 5 December, followed by the final on 6 December. The Japan Federation of Guitarists has announced a field of sixteen advancing players, including three exempt from the recorded first round.
What to listen for
The semifinal’s compulsory work is the opening Allegro from Walton’s Five Bagatelles. Finalists must perform Kohei Kondo’s Wandering and Running on the hills, together with a free-choice programme drawing on three historical periods.
Following a competition can be a rewarding way to discover performers and compare approaches to shared repertoire. The compulsory works provide a point of reference across otherwise different programmes.
Audience information
Applications closed on 31 July 2026, so this is a date for following the live rounds rather than a new call for entrants. The federation’s English page confirms the venue and start times but does not list audience ticket prices. Check with the organiser for admission arrangements; no livestream is confirmed in that listing.
