Croatia’s Classical Guitar Days pairs local repertoire with new sonic experiments

A programme devoted to Croatian composers opens the 14th Classical Guitar Days on Monday 2 November, beginning a five-day festival spread across Split, Hvar, Solin and Trogir. Srđan Bulat’s recital at the Ivo Tijardović Concert Hall in Hrvatski dom Split starts at 8pm, with free admission.

The opening concert offers a useful corrective to the idea that the guitar’s history can be told through only its most frequently performed Spanish and Latin American works. Under the title A Century of Croatian Music for Guitar, Bulat places several generations of Croatian writing in the foreground.

A repertoire with room to grow

The festival’s published programme includes Slavko Fumić’s Mala melodija and Nocturno, Miroslav Miletić’s Međimurska suita, Boris Papandopulo’s Dodekafonska studija and Zoran Juranić’s Ciaccona. Music by Mirko Krstičević and Berislav Šipuš appears alongside Bulat’s own Dodekafonska meditacija and Smiraj. This is his sixth appearance at the festival.

The wider programme moves from the guitar-and-bandoneon partnership of Duo Bandini–Chiacchiaretta in Split on 3 November to Shih-yu Liu and Luka Lovreković’s East Meets West at the Church of the Holy Cross, Veli Varoš, on 4 November. Both concerts start at 8pm; the latter is free.

Beyond the familiar recital

On 5 November at 8pm, Hvar’s Arsenal hosts Christian Lavernier and Jacopo Baboni Schilingi’s WOLF 1069. The project brings Lavernier’s eleven-string La Soñada into dialogue with interactive algorithms and live sound transformation. It is a particularly striking counterpoint to the opening recital: one programme asks listeners to recover a national repertoire, while another tests how a guitarist and a composer might reshape the concert itself.

Festival events continue through 6 November. Admission arrangements vary, so consult the individual concert pages before travelling.
