What connects classical guitar repertoire with flamenco, Latin American styles, jazz and orchestral music? The International Guitar Festival Tübingen puts that question at the centre of its 2026 edition, held over 6–8 and 13–15 November in the German university town.
The theme is Raíces—Spanish for “roots”—and the organisers describe an event devoted to rediscovering where musical traditions come from and how they connect performers and audiences across generations.
One instrument, many musical languages
The festival’s published programme brings together classical guitar, flamenco, jazz, Latin American repertoire, chamber music and symphonic music. Concert headings include Brazilian guitarist Yamandú Costa, Flamenco & Jazz, the Manoa Quartet and an orchestral collaboration, alongside events for emerging players.
For classical guitarists, that breadth is more than a change of atmosphere. The instrument’s modern concert repertoire has repeatedly borrowed gestures, rhythms, timbres and formal ideas from folk and popular traditions. Hearing those influences closer to their original setting can bring fresh insight to familiar recital music.
An Open Stage, international competition, laureates’ concert, matinee and closing concert are also on the festival calendar. Together they give the programme a balance of professional recitals and opportunities for developing artists to be heard.
Planning around two weekends
Unlike a single uninterrupted festival week, Tübingen’s events span two sets of dates, so visitors should check each concert individually. The festival website lists programme sections and competition information, with final timings and booking options available through the organiser.
