Gabriel Bianco visits the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Society’s concert season for two afternoon performances on 7 and 8 November. Saturday’s recital takes place at the Zlock Performing Arts Center in Newtown; Sunday’s follows at Settlement Music School’s Mary Louise Branch in Philadelphia. Both begin at 3pm.
Bianco’s name is familiar from the competition circuit, including his first prize at the Guitar Foundation of America’s International Concert Artist Competition in 2008. Yet a more revealing way to approach these appearances may be through the activities that surround his solo career: ensemble playing, arranging and teaching.
The soloist as collaborator
The society’s artist profile notes that Bianco has been a member of Quatuor Éclisses since 2012, contributing arrangements and recordings to the guitar quartet. Since 2018 he has also taught at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Those parallel roles offer a useful frame for listening to a musician whose professional life is not confined to the solo stage.
A guitar recital can invite the ear to follow several voices at once. The listener might attend to how a melody projects above an accompaniment, how contrasting lines answer one another, or how the performer changes colour without losing the continuity of a phrase. These are not predictions about an individual performance, but practical ways into the experience of hearing a solo instrument carry a complete musical argument.
Two afternoon opportunities
The presenter’s page includes listening examples of Bianco in Barrios’s La Catedral and Choro de Saudade, and Regondi’s Introduction and Caprice. These are useful introductions to his playing, rather than confirmation that the same works will be performed in Pennsylvania.
The Newtown venue is at 275 Swamp Road; the Philadelphia concert is at 416 Queen Street. Separate ticket links are provided for each date. Readers should consult the society’s current programme and booking information before making plans.
Watch: Bianco performs Regondi’s Introduction and Caprice in this listening example selected by the presenter. It is not a preview of the announced concert programme.
