Quito’s 21st Festival del Requinto will celebrate an instrument closely tied to Ecuadorian musical expression on Sunday 15 November 2026. Presented by Casa de la Música, the concert pays tribute to Homero Hidrobo, an important figure in Ecuadorian music associated with both the requinto and classical guitar.
The requinto’s distinctive voice
The requinto is a smaller, higher-pitched member of the guitar family with a prominent role in several Latin American traditions. Its bright singing register makes it a natural vehicle for melodic ornament, dialogue and expressive solo lines. For classical guitarists who know Latin American repertoire mainly through the concert stage, hearing specialists in the instrument’s own tradition offers a different perspective on phrasing, sound and rhythmic character.
The announced performers are Carla Román, Daniel Quezada, Eduardo “Chocolate” Morales, Samir Robles, Pablo Paz and Víctor Armijos. The organiser describes the evening as a tribute to Hidrobo’s contribution to the requinto and classical guitar in Ecuador.
This is a particularly welcome kind of festival programming: rather than treating the guitar solely as an imported European concert instrument, it celebrates a related local practice that has developed its own techniques, repertoire and cultural role.
