Bach’s Partita for solo flute, BWV 1013, offers guitarists an absorbing question: how can a single instrumental line suggest a larger musical world? Jorge Caballero takes up its opening Allemande in this recent Siccas Guitars recording.
The Peruvian-born guitarist won the Naumburg International Guitar Competition in 1996, aged nineteen. His international career includes particularly ambitious transcriptions, making his approach to music conceived for another instrument a compelling subject for the Watch collection.
A listening focus
Follow the direction of the phrases and the points where the line implies a change of harmony. For students, this is a useful starting point for discussing musical breathing, articulation and the relationship between a transcription and its original instrument.
Caballero performs on a 2013 Andrea Tacchi guitar. The studio presentation keeps the performer and instrument at the centre of the frame; the original upload offers resolution up to 4K.
